Fear & phobias
I don't tend to have a set programme to follow or set techniques. Most people usually ask for a specific technique to cure their dogs. I dot use these, if I give an example it may show you how tailored the approach is and how a one technique or standardised approach wont always work. I work without judgement and strive to encourage, teach and find a solution with the owners.
I aim to listen to owners, observe their dogs and take a thorough case history, no stone unturned, to find a solution based on the root cause of the problem and their answers! i work holistically and look at the dog as a whole ( their physical, emotional, personality, experiences, health , lifestyle, attachments to the family, owner personality, diet, exercise, training routines). I occasionally refer back to other practitioners where necessary. I ensure each dog is fit to treat medically and refer where necessary. This includes looking at: their lifestyle, diet, medications, health and vitality, experiences, breed traits, family dynamics, early years experiences.
I don't treat behaviours, I treat the dog and person. All dogs are different, all owners are different. I use positive reinforcement, but also believe that we cant reward every behaviour.
I believe in appropriate punishment, a verbal correction is a punishment after all but not aversive techniques or harmful techniques, instead I stand to improve dog and owners confidence, not destroy it. I believe in routine, enhancing the breed characteristics we cant change and changing the areas we can change to ensure owners and dogs lead a fulfilled and happy life together based on communication and understanding.
With many variables it can be like a giant jigsaw , but then we have to find many variable solutions. One size doesn't fit all and this is the aspect I love most about my job, Its always different!
I teach obedience training, tricks, mental enrichment , as part of a holistic approach where needed but don't subscribe to the notion of over stimulating dogs all day. I base my training on a routine and tasks for the dog to complete on their own to build resilience, confidence and improve their problem solving.
Often I treat owners so they can be calmer, focussed, a leader if needed, not based on aversion or aggression, but on mutual understanding, direction and better understanding of a dogs mind.
I believe they are our role models and teachers, many of their behaviours are simply them trying to communicate with us. They are our teachers, we only have to consider how quickly they go through their social etiquette working out who is more dominate and submissive in the pack. to maintain social and hierarchical equilibrium We can learn a lot by observing. If you ever see a well balanced dog who is socially apt, they make wonderful teachers. Shame they cant speak! Instead they speak through their body language, behaviours and social clues. My job is to help you read these clues and communicate better with your dog,
